Twelve fully marked skins of Tempest Mk V aircraft operated by 486 (NZ) Squadron.

Template by Alex Voicu with some revisions/edits by Casey1976. Skins by HBPencil.

Place these skins in: \IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\PaintSchemes\Skins\TempestMkV

486 Squadron was formed on the 7 March 1942 under Article XV of the Empire Training Scheme. As an Article XV New Zealand squadron the majority, but not all, of
the aircrew were supplied by the RNZAF however the unit was under the control of the RAF, which also supplied and owned all the equipment and payed the pilots.

The squadron's motto "Hiwa hau Maka" is Maori and translates as "Beware of the Wild Winds". It is a reference to the three types of Hawker aircraft operated by the
squadron: the Hurricane, the Typhoon and the Tempest.

Please note that all but one of these skins are based on photos which only show partial details. I have tried to be as accurate as possible in regards to details based on
the dates of these photos as Tempest markings (e.g. national markings, spinner colour etc.) changed over time, however I can never be 100% sure that I have been 100%
accurate.

HBP_TempestV_EJ627
Based on a still taken from IWM film ACB 218 as published in 2nd Tactical Air Force, vol. 4 by Christopher Shores and Chris Thomas. The stills show this aircraft and
another landing at Volkel after a patrol of the Nijmegen area. EJ627 SA-E was piloted by W/O W. A. "Wackie" Kalka on that occasion.

HBP_TempestV_EJ719
EJ719 SA-K in October 1944 when 486 Squadron was based at Volkel. This aircraft was later transfered to 3 Squadron and re-coded JF-R.

HBP_TempestV_JN754
JN754 SA-A when the squadron was based at the Newchurch Advanced Landing Ground in Kent, England while engaged in anti V1 operations. This aircraft downed 5 1/2
V1s; 5 while flown by F/L Harvey Sweetman and 1/2 with F/O W. A. Hart.

HBP_TempestV_JN766
JN766 SA-N as photographed at Castle Camps, Cambridgeshire when the squadron was converting from the Typhoon to the Tempest. This aircraft was an early production
type so it had the longer barreled Hispano Mk II cannons and no capacity for underwing stores such as droptanks. This aircraft downed 2 V1s on 23 June while fown by
F/O W. L. "Dusty" Miller.
Note that at the time it was photographed at Castle Camps it carried the squadron code SA forward of the fuselage roundel on both sides with the individual aircraft code
N aft of it. That was the practice while the squadron was equiped with Typhoons however that changed when it converted to Tempests.

HBP_TempestV_JN802
Based on a still taken from IWM film ACB 218 as published in 2nd Tactical Air Force, vol. 4 by Christopher Shores and Chris Thomas. The stills show this aircraft and
another landing at Volkel after a patrol of the Nijmegen area. JN802 SA-C was piloted by Flt Sgt W. J. Campbell on that occasion.

HBP_TempestV_JN803
JN803 SA-D was one of the most succesful Tempests of 486 Squadron during the anti V1 operations with well over 20 claims. The V1 kill markings belong to the aircraft,
not any one pilot. 486 Squadron was the second highest scoring day fighter squadron against V1s.

HBP_TempestV_JN805_E
JN805 SA-E scored 6 1/2 V1 kills during June and July 1944.

HBP_TempestV_JN805_U
The same aircraft as above but re-coded as U. It must have been rather war wary when, on 14 April 1945, it was shot done by a Ta-152H flown by Feldwebel Willi Reschke of
Stab./JG 301. The Tempest pilot, W/O Owen J. Mitchell, was killed.

HBP_TempestV_NV763_N
Based on a photo which was probably taken in early January 1945. The Sky fuselage band has been painted out yet the spinner is still Sky rather than repainted Night.

HBP_TempestV_NV763_Z
As above but recoded as Z and the spinner now painted Night. On 24 February 1945 F/L N. J. "Pip" Powell claimed a Me109 destroyed flying this aircraft.

HBP_TempestV_NV969
SA-A was the regualr aircraft of S/L W. E. "Smokey" Schrader before he was promoted to Wing Commander and given command of 616 Squadron, the first squadron of
Gloster Meteors operating on the Continent. S/L Schrader did not have rank pennants or his 'kills' marked on his aircraft.

HBP_TempestV_SN129
SA-M was the aircraft of S/L J. C. "Jimmy" Sheddon, the last CO of 486 Squadron. The rank pennants and kill markings are his; however this was not the only aircraft he flew
while CO and a number of other pilots also flew this aircraft during that time.
